What’s the deal with the Windscreen Flaps on top of Divider Nets?

Part 1: What exactly are these screens in the top of retractable batting cages?
You often see 2, 1.5 foot wide, black, windscreen panels running along the top of the divider nets in retractable batting cages. These are often referred to as “aprons.”
The purpose is to provide a protective barrier so cage balls don’t fly over the divider and into the adjacent cage. You need one panel on EACH side of the divider to block balls from both sides.
These are usually made of a vinyl, windscreen material with metal grommets (eye holes) along the top so they can be attached to the ceiling net.
Part 2: Vinyl Apron Installation
While some installers use spring clips to attach the apron to the ceiling net, we recommend weaving a rope through the grommets and ceiling net. As you can see in the image below, simply using spring clips can create gaps in between allowing balls to fly through, defeating the purpose of the screen.
Some ceiling nets may have an additional rope sewn in for this purpose and the screen can be secured to that rope with zip ties, or something stronger like hog rings. Otherwise, an installer can simply weave a rope through the grommets and the ceiling net simultaneously. This eliminates the gaps.
Part 3: Material Calculation
On quotes, they are typically priced by square foot.
Here’s the math:
In a 15’H x 30’W x 70L’ wide cage area with 1,15’H x 70’L Divider net, you would need TWO, 1.5’ x 70’ long windscreen panels. ONE panel is 105 sq ft (1.5 * 70), so TWO panels would be 210 sq ft of windscreen material.
So, if you have a larger cage area with TWO, 70’ long dividers, you would need FOUR, 1.5’ x 70’ windscreen panels totalling 420 sq ft. THREE retractable divider nets would require 6 of them equalling 630 sq ft, 4 dividers would need 8, or 840 sq ft and so forth.
