Happy New Year!! From the ATXTurf Team….

It’s also a NEW semester with NEW routines, NEW class schedules and NEW groups of kids & parents. And it’s not too early to start thinking about NEW ways to improve your fields and facility areas for Spring Baseball & Softball.

Hard to believe, but Pitchers & Catchers is only weeks away and most of us won’t be travelling south to sunny climates to state-of-the-art ballparks.

BUT, you CAN bring some life to your fields & facilities that are either worn out from last fall or suffered from winter’s harsh hand.

In August, we wrote an article on Batting Cage Turf Maintenance for the Fall Season, available here.

But what about your Bull Pen Area? Or other high traffic areas?

BullPens on ball fields are often neglected as they are tucked away in less visible, low-lying areas.  Winter can do a number in these places.   The grass died, the snow melted and you are left with a muddy mess for your pitchers and catchers to navigate.

Let’s look at 3 common BullPen design scenarios:

Bull Pen Design 1:

If your budget allows,   2, 15 x 70 rolls of turf allows you to comfortably cover the entire area of the bull pen.  1, 15 x 70 is 1,500 sq ft, so two would be 3,000 sq ft.   Our ideal turf for Bull Pens is the ATX Pro 50 Sport which is $1.69 sq ft, so your total would be $5,070 plus shipping.  We also have more economical solutions, in the All Purpose Sports Turf or Lined Turfs.

Bull Pen Design 2:

This is a more economical design for putting turf in your Bull Pen, as it requires less square feet of turf.  If the existing majority of the area is in decent condition, and you just need to turf the high traffic areas for the catchers and pitchers, you can get away with 2, 15 x 30 ft rolls of turf, as in the example below.   1, 15 x 30 roll of turf is 450 sq ft, so two rolls would be 900 sq ft.   The ATXTurf Pro 50 Sport is $1.69 sq ft, so your total would be $1,521 plus shipping.  We also have more economical solutions, in the All Purpose Sports Turf or Lined Turfs.

Bull Pen Design 3:

This is the most common design seen in professional Bull Pens because they have the means to pack clay in all the right areas and maintain it well.   The turf is simply in the middle between the mounds and homeplate, emulating the real field.  This is achievable with 2, 15 x 40 rolls of turf.  1, 15 x 40 is 600 sq ft, so 2 rolls would be 1,200 sq ft.  The ATX Pro 50 Sport is $1.69 so the total would be $2,028 plus shipping.

Don’t forget, ATXTurf developed it’s own line of turf glue designed specifically for Batting Cages which can be used to seam your BullPen Turf, as well.   Click here for more details.

If you need to clean up your Bull Pen area this spring, don’t hesitate to contact ATXTurf if you have more questions, or need to order turf.    Remember, it will take around 10 business days to arrive to the facility, so plan ahead accordingly.    Read our blog post on how to unload rolls of turf from freight truck here.
