🪵 1. Prep the Subfloor
Remove old flooring (if needed), baseboards, and trim
Clean thoroughly—no dust or debris
Ensure subfloor is:
Flat (within ~3/16″ over 10 ft)
Dry and structurally sound
Fix dips with leveling compound if needed
👉 Laminate telegraphs imperfections, so this step matters.
📦 2. Acclimate the Flooring
Let boxes sit in the room 48–72 hours
Keep room at normal living temperature/humidity
Don’t install straight from a cold garage
🧻 3. Install Underlayment
Roll out underlayment (unless it’s pre-attached)
Run it perpendicular to plank direction
Tape seams (don’t overlap unless specified)
👉 Over concrete, use a moisture barrier or combo underlayment.
📐 4. Plan Layout
Install planks parallel to the longest wall (or main light source)
Measure the room:
Avoid ending with a tiny strip on the last row
Leave a 1/4″–3/8″ expansion gap around all edges
🔧 5. Install the First Row
Start in a corner, tongue side toward the wall
Use spacers to maintain expansion gap
Connect planks end-to-end
Cut the last board to fit
🔗 6. Install Remaining Rows
Start each row with the leftover piece from the previous row (if it’s at least ~8–12″)
Angle the plank into the previous row and click it down
Tap gently with a tapping block if needed
Keep joints staggered (no repeating patterns)
👉 This is where laminate is easier than hardwood—no nails, just locking joints.
✂️ 7. Cut Around Obstacles
Use a jigsaw or oscillating tool for:
Door jambs (undercut them if possible)
Vents, corners, and pipes
For doorways, undercut the trim so flooring slides underneath for a clean look
📏 8. Install the Final Row
Rip boards lengthwise to fit
Use a pull bar to lock them in tight
Maintain the expansion gap
🧹 9. Finish Up
Remove spacers
Reinstall baseboards or add quarter round
Install transition strips at doorways
Clean the floor (dry or slightly damp—no soaking)
