“When planning your turf installation, think about traffic patterns and where the seams will fall in those patterns.”

Are you planning a DIY Turf project in your yard, doggie day care or playground?

For turf installers, the seams between 2 pieces of turf are the trickiest part of a turf job.   Nobody wants to see the seams and over time, they tend to be the areas to be compromised.

This can happen for several reasons.

  1. Not enough glue was applied to the seam fabric.  Or the glue was uneven.
  2. The turf was disturbed while the glue was curing.
  3. Turf edges were not cut straight and don’t match up together well.
  4. Finally, and the point of this article, the seam was fine, but is in the highest traffic area.

When planning your turf installation, think about traffic patterns and where the seams will fall in those patterns.

As you know, turf comes in 15’ wide rolls, so any area more than 15’ wide will have a seam.  So when you are deciding which direction to lay the rolls, or how to cut them into the area,  think about where the seam is going to fall in the area.

It batting cages, it works well when the netting happens to fall over the seams, because that means the seams won’t get as much foot traffic.

If you have a sidewalk that approaches the turf area, don’t put the seam where everyone will step off the sidewalk onto the turf.

Have a fenced-in area?   Maybe avoid having the seam fall right in the entry-way.

Have a playground?   Avoid having the seam fall right at the bottom of the slide.

You get the idea.   A little forethought and planning can make your turf job last much longer and save repair time & money years down the road.
